Angkor Thom means "the great city" in Khmer

07/05/2013 14:34

Angkor Thom means "the great city" in Khmer. The 12th-century royal Buddhist city is especially famed for its grand Bayon Temple, but has several other sights of interest as well.travel to Cambodia

The Royal Palace situated within the city of Angkor Thom is of an earlier date and belonged to kings of the tenth and first half of the tenth and first half of the eleventh centuries. Although the foundations and an enclosing wall around the palace with entry towers have been identified, little evidence remains of the layout of the buildings inside the enclosure. This absence of archaeological evidence of the royal buildings suggests that they were constructed of wood and have perished.
The French ascertained a general plan of the Royal Palace (see map opposite). It included the temple-mountain of Phimeanakas and surrounding pools together with residences and buildings for administering the capital, which were probably at the back of the enclosure. Jayavarman VII reconstructed the original site of the Royal Palace Palace to erect the city of Angkor Thom, which was centered on the temple of Bayon and surrounded by a wall.

Ho Chi Minh City began as a small fishing village known as Prey Nokor

30/04/2013 11:40

Ho Chi Minh City began as a small fishing village known as Prey Nokor. The area that the city now occupies was originally swampland, and was inhabited by Khmer people for centuries before the arrival of the Vietnamese. In Khmer folklore southern Vietnam was given to the Vietnamese government as a dowry for the marriage of a Vietnamese princess to a Khmer prince in order to stop constant invasions and pillaging of Khmer villages.Vietnam tour

Beginning in the early 17th century, colonization of the area by Vietnamese settlers gradually isolated the Khmer of the Mekong Delta from their brethren in Cambodia proper and resulted in their becoming a minority in the delta.[citation needed] In 1623, King Chey Chettha II of Cambodia (1618–1628) allowed Vietnamese refugees fleeing the Tr?nh–Nguy?n civil war in Vietnam to settle in the area of Prey Nokor and to set up a custom house there. Increasing waves of Vietnamese settlers, which the Cambodian kingdom could not impede because it was weakened by war with Thailand, slowly Vietnamized the area. In time, Prey Nokor became known as Saigon. Prey Nokor was the most important commercial seaport to the Khmers. The loss of the city prevented the Cambodians access to the Indochine. Subsequently, the Khmers' access to the sea was now limited to the Gulf of Thailand.
In the past Saigon was first the capital of Cochinchina and later of South Vietnam. Following the fall of Saigon in 1975, the city area was extended and Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City to honor North Vietnam's revulotionary leader H? Chí Minh. Even though Ho Chi Minh City is correct, the two names are still used interchangeably. Saigon is sometimes also used for the downtown area of District 1 and 3 rather than the entire city.

SHWEDAGON Pagoda is Burma’s most famous Buddhist monument

18/04/2013 11:53

SHWEDAGON Pagoda is Burma’s most famous Buddhist monument. It rises like a beacon above the city skyline in Yangon which is no mean feat, given the high-rises springing up around the city today.

Shwedagon Pagoda is a Buddhist pagoda in central Yangon, known as one of the most sacred sites for Buddhists in Myanmar. The site included a photo gallery, displaying precious photographic records of the pagoda, including pictures taken in the early 20th century. However, many years of exposure to hot and humid air caused discoloration and other signs of degradation to the photo exhibits. In this project, Fujifilm renewed the gallery and restored damaged photographs. Using proprietary technologies nurtured over a number of years, the company scanned deteriorated photos, repaired the discolored and damaged parts of the images, and produced premium-quality prints. The renovated gallery now features newly-taken pictures of the pagoda to join the restored images.
The massive 99 meter high gold plated pagoda with the diamond studded spire set on top of a small hill in downtown Yangon dominates the area and is visible from much of the city.

The Longmen Grottoes are located sixteen kilometers south of Luoyang

25/03/2013 11:53

The Longmen Grottoes are located sixteen kilometers south of Luoyang in Henan province, on the banks of the Yi River. They constitute a world-renowned artistic treasure, now protected as a National Key Cultural Relics Protected Unit and listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2000. The grottoes were begun in the year 494 AD, around the time the Northern Wei Emperor Xiao Wen moved the capital to Luoyang. The caves then passed through some 400 years of carving and construction, through the dynasties of East and West Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and Northern Song. The grottoes honeycomb the mountains.

Adjacent to the Medical Prescription Cave is the much larger Earliest Cave, carved between AD 495 and 575. It's a narrow, high-roofted cave featuring a Buddha statue and a profusion of sculptures, particularly of flying apsaras. This was probably the first cave of the Longmen group to be built.
During the history, some parts of Longmen Grottoes were destroyed by erosion and vandalism. Numerous crevices in the rock bases cause some caves to become unstable or even to collapse, thus damaging the sculptures. Saline sediments resulting from acid rain, train and automobile vibrations and natural disasters have also affected the site. To protect the valuable treasure house, the central and local governments are endeavoring to improve the environment of the the scenic area.
